While on holiday this year I sat on the beach and did a quick pencil sketch of a nearby family playing rounders. It was a warming scene of kids and adults enjoying family time. I wandered over to the family and gave them this quick scribble. The lady seemed very pleased although I was a bit embraced it wasn’t a very good drawing. I did think twice about screwing it up and hiding it rather than a surprise gift for these strangers. We artists have so much self pressure that things need to be just so before showing folks, but I thought to myself, what the heck, it was more about a glimpse of that moment captured on paper rather than getting a correct pencil drawing to be impressed by. Afterwards I was glad I approached them and gave it to them, the battle with my shyness was won on that day with a home run.
